Biking With Dogs

For dogs out there that are not ordinary couch potatoes, you will need to help release their pent-up energy somehow. Biking is a great activity for you and your dog to stay fit together. Listed below are a couple ways you can take your dog out on a bike with you.

Biking with a Bike Leash

A bike leash is an attachment that allows your dog to run alongside your bike. This can be fun for short jaunts on a bike path. Watch for pad injuries, it is very easy to tear your dog’s pads while running on paved paths. Try to find a dirt trail with plenty of space for your dog to run alongside you.

Bikejoring

Bikejoring is a sport where your dog is attached to the frame of the bike by a bungee line and a pole that keeps the line from being tangled in your front tire. Your dog will be pulling the bike with you pedaling behind him/her. This sport, like many, requires a lot of time and training to be successful at it without hurting yourself or your dog. Do your research and see if it is right for you.

Mountain Biking with Dogs

Many mountain bikers enjoy taking their “trail dog” out with them. It is important that you know how to mountain bike before you attempt this with your dog. There are many mountain biking groups in New England that would be happy to teach you the trade. Your local bike shop should know how to connect you to the right group. Unlike the other activities, it is very dangerous to have your dog attached to your bike for this activity, so this is not for every dog.

WARNING: These activities, if not trained properly, can be very dangerous. Use caution and be sure you take your time and train for this activity. With possible pad injuries you may want to investigate having your dog wear boots or paw wax. Go slow and pay attention to your pooch. These activities are at your dog’s pace not yours.
