7 Ways To Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost

June 1, 2022

Lost Pet Prevention Month is June! This is an important topic, and also a sad one. As many as one in three pets are stolen or lost at some point over the course of their lives. That’s a pretty sobering statistic. While we hope all of our patients are safe and sound at home, this is one area where it definitely pays to be on the ready. Here, a vet lists some ways to keep your beloved pet from getting lost.

Keep Kitty In

Fluffy may love ignoring you when you call her or leaving dusty pawprints on your car, but she’s much safer inside. Keeping your kitty in not only reduces the chances of her getting lost: it also protects her from dangers like weather, cars, and other animals.

Train Fido

Fido ought to know basic obedience commands, such as Come, Stay, Sit, Heel, and Lay Down. This is very important since that training can help keep your pooch from running off if he slips out the door or if you drop his leash.

Secure Yard

Fido is always on the lookout for adventure, and is not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure you have secure fencing, so your pooch can’t go over, under, or through it. We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.

Spay/Neuter

Pets that haven’t been fixed are at greater risk of getting lost, as they often want to run off looking for love. If your furry pal is intact, make that appointment today.

Use Leashes

Even if Fido is really well-trained, it’s always safest to keep him leashed whenever you and him go off your property. Better safe than sorry!

Vigilance

Lost pet reports tend to rise significantly at certain times. Two of the biggest concerns are New Years’ Eve and July 4th, when the noise of fireworks scares many pets, causing them to run in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Try to be extra careful at these times!

GPS Collars

This is a fairly new technology, and we’re relieved and thrilled to see it. There are different types of these, so be sure to do a little research before purchasing one. Of course, you’ll want to look at reviews, but it’s also important to check options for subscription fees and perks. While GPS collars are great for tracking, it’s also crucial to have a well-fitted regular collar for your dog’s everyday use.
