Do you love snow dogs? While it may seem like they are, snow dogs aren’t an official AKC group. Most of the dogs that fall into the ‘snow’ category are actually part of the working group. However, pooches with thick fur, such as Akitas, huskies, Malamutes, and Samoyeds are commonly referred to as snow dogs. These pretty pups are often absolutely gorgeous, and they can make very lovable, fun pets, but they do have some specific needs. A vet talks about snow dog care below.
Good Grooming Is A Must
So, is there a downside to having a very pretty, fluffy dog? That pretty fur is going to show up everywhere, which makes regular brushing a must. You’ll want to get a brush that’s specifically made for undercoats. You can also use handheld vacuums or vacuum attachments. And don’t ever clip or shave Fido. This can damage his undercoat.
Don’t Clothe Fido
With his thick coat, Fido is much better equipped to deal with the cold than a Chihuahua or Boxer. So never put clothing on your canine pal, since he could overheat! But in summer, he may need a cooling vest, or even a cool, kiddie pool of water. While snow dogs are built for cold weather, it’s still important to be aware of Winter Pet Dangers that can affect all breeds.
Offer Plenty Of Exercise
Many snow dogs are extremely active. Huskies, for example, have worked as sled dogs, so they naturally want to run. Make sure your furry buddy has lots of toys and playtime. Otherwise, he may become a master, mischief-maker. And a strong, sturdy fence is a must with these guys.
Training Is A Must
Basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, and Come should be something Fido knows well. You may have to put in some extra time with Heel, since pulling is natural for many of these pups.
Have A Singalong
Snow dogs are known to be quite vocal. Fido probably won’t bark all that much, though he’ll likely howl or sing. This is natural behavior, so it’s not something to punish your canine buddy for. Try to just go with it, and sing along with him!
Do Breed Research
Dogs are often susceptible to developing breed-specific health conditions. Read up about your furry bff, and know what he may be susceptible to. This is very important, since you may be able to spot problems early on and take preventative measures. Ask your vet for care tips.
