Celebration Safety Tips For You And Your Pet

July 3, 2018

Summer is a time to spend with loved ones, school is out, and your pets are surely glad to spend extra time with you. Whether you are at a cook-out, just spending a nice day outside with your pet, or celebrating special occasions like National Mutt Day on July 31st, there are a few safety tips we would like to share to help keep your pets healthy and safe this summer.

COOK OUTS

Allowing your dog to eat bones and table scraps from your barbeque is not always a great idea. Your dog should not chew anything that you cannot bend or squish with your hand as it could put your dog at risk for breaking a tooth. Feeding your pets fatty foods such as hot dogs, sausage, pizza, and cheeseburgers should be avoided because it can lead to pancreatitis and other stomach issues.

PAD BURNS

What is better than going for a nice walk or hanging out by the pool on a beautiful day? Your dog loves to be with you but if you are unable to hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds comfortably, it is likely too hot for your dog’s paws. Avoid pad injuries by going for walks early morning or late afternoon, walking on grass, or even purchasing some footwear for your pup.

FIREWORKS AND THUNDER STORMS

Every year we see an increased number of missing pets during the weeks following the Independence Day festivities. Keep your pets safe this summer and avoid bringing them to any firework displays. Please do not leave them outside unsupervised. We see many patients with fear of loud noises which could cause them to flee your home in a panic and get hurt or lost. If you believe your pet has severe anxiety to fireworks/thunder storms and you think they may need a sedative, call us to discuss your options. We are here to help!
