Senior Cat Care Tips

March 1, 2021

Is your kitty aged nine or older? If so, you have a furry little retiree on your hands! Cats are quite independent, but they do need good care in order to thrive. As Fluffy ages, you may need to make a few adjustments to her schedule to keep her comfy and purring. Read on for some great senior cat care tips from a local veterinarian.

Comforts

Small touches will go a long way in keeping your kitty comfortable. Soft beds are a must. If Fluffy has trouble jumping or climbing, set out some footstools or ottomans for her to use as stairs. We also recommend getting a litterbox made just for senior cats, as these have lower sides.

Food

Obesity is a big problem—literally—among our feline patients. Fluffy won’t be as active as she once was, which will make it easy for her to pack on extra weight. Ask your vet for specific advice, especially tips on portion sizes, feeding schedules, and switching over to a senior-formula food.

Veterinary Care

Just like people, cats tend to develop medical issues in their senior years. Fluffy will need to see her doctor more often as she ages. At home, watch for anything that could be an indication of sickness. Some red flags include hiding, poor grooming, changes in appetite, fever, breathing issues, and uncharacteristic vocalizations. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything odd.

Playtime

Playing is just as fun and beneficial for older kitties as it is for young cats. Take a few minutes a day to play with your feline friend. This will help Fluffy stay in good physical shape. Plus, timing those tricky pounces offers beneficial mental stimulation, which will be good for her mind.

Grooming

You may need to give your cat a little help with her grooming rituals. Brushing Fluffy will remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will keep her comfortable and reduce hairballs. This is also a good way to spend time with your furball, and just make her feel pampered.

Safety

Kitties never really outgrow their capacity for mischief. Keep Fluffy indoors, and take care not to let her eat or play with dangerous items, such as toxic plants and medications. Better safe than sorry!
